The damper features a free-rotating inertia ring surrounded by viscous silicone fluid, all enclosed in a laser-welded, sealed housing. As the crankshaft rotates, torsional vibrations naturally occur during engine operation. The outer housing of the damper moves with the crankshaft while the inertia ring attempts to rotate at a constant speed. This difference in motion causes the silicone fluid to shear, absorbing the energy and reducing harmful vibration forces.

By controlling these destructive torsional vibrations, the damper helps protect critical engine components from damage. If left unchecked, these vibrations can lead to cracked or broken crankshafts, valve train problems, and premature bearing wear.
